Women on Wheels comes to Kesgrave

Registration is now open for a popular cycling event coming to Kesgrave in September.

Women on Wheels (WoW) Kesgrave takes place on Sunday 1st September and registrations for the event are now open.

Women on Wheels events are mass participation female-only bike rides, with a strong focus on the fun, friendly and inclusive aspects of cycling. All ages and abilities are welcome.

This will be the inaugural WoW Kesgrave with two routes of either 10 or 20 miles to choose from.  WoW Kesgrave is organised by East Suffolk Council, Fresh Start New Beginnings, Lighthouse Women’s Aid, Pedal Power, Plomesgate Cycling Club and Sportsmed East and with Suffolk County Council as a supporting partner. Any profit from the entries will go towards supporting two nominated charities; Fresh Start New Beginnings and Lighthouse Women’s Aid.

Entrants are encouraged to fundraise for these two charities, with the person raising the most money winning an invitation to the East Suffolk Business & Community Awards on Thursday 3 October. The prize will include a three course meal, an overnight stay and breakfast at Milsoms in Kesgrave.

Nicole Rickard, Head of Communities at East Suffolk Council said: “The WoW events are always popular with women and girls from across the district and help promote cycling in a fun and friendly way. We’re pleased to add Kesgrave to the list and welcome all those wishing to take part in this new event.”

Kesgrave is one of five WoW events being held across Suffolk this year, with others taking place in Bury St Edmunds, Debenham, Sudbury and Southwold.

Patsy Johnson-Cisse, Fundraising Manager at Fresh Start New Beginnings said: “We are thrilled to be part of the first Women on Wheels in Kesgrave, to encourage mums, daughters, aunts, work colleagues and friends together to take part in the event and also raise awareness and donations for both charities  really is an exciting event to be part of.”

Laura Squirell, Fundraising & Volunteer Manager at Lighthouse Women’s Aid said: “Lighthouse is excited to be a charity partner for WOW Kesgrave. We’re hoping women of all ages will be encouraged to dust off their bikes and come together to enjoy this fantastic event and support two local charities in changing the lives of women and children in our communities.”

Mark Reynolds, Pedal Power Cycles said: “Pedal Power Cycles are proud to be associated with WoW Kesgrave this year. It is fantastic to be supporting and promoting this great event to introduce more women into cycling. As a local bike shop we think it’s our moral obligation to be involved and encouraging women to take part, have fun and enjoy cycling. There are so many benefits to cycling including heath, fitness, individual esteem and well-being.”
Pete and Bev Whelan from Plomesgate Cycling Club said: “Women on Wheels is a great day and a great way to get back on your bike, plus there’s coffee and cake, what could be better. We’ve been involved with cycling (touring, commuting, racing and event organising) for 40 years in Suffolk, and likewise our children have cycled from an early age and continue to do so now that they have left home. This event is a great way for those who haven’t cycled in a while to give it a try in a fun environment.”

Anne-Marie Williams from Sports Med East said: “Sportsmed East is delighted to be one of the partners of this fantastic event coming to Kesgrave. We firmly believe in promoting sports participation for all and this initiative will hopefully encourage more females of all ages and abilities to get on their bikes and take part.”
